this essay will explore how Akpome in his article "The politics of language" examines how inadicute english exposure during the early stages of a students educational life leds to the pupil bieng anable to cope and compete with other students from abroad. the essay will look clously at how south africas history has actualy led to the relactance towards the language and how this is cripling the students and leding to adrop in the entry requrements in higher education.
Arkpome illustrates that he understands that embracing the language of the oppresor is not easy hance he says he does not mean to "over simplifiey a complex situation". however he feels that south africsns should "deal with the issue with pregmatisim". they should be realistic to the fact that english is the ligua franca of politics of business and of education. what he is ephesizing is that english is the global language in use and that if messures are not taken to adapt to that fact, south africa will be an incompetent country.
the auther does not say that south africans should abanden their home language but rader that they should learn them simultaneously with english. he further illustrates thatdespite the fact that students are tought in their mother tougue they still do not seem to improve.his agument is that our local languages are not well developed and that it is impractical for the country to deny its children the chance to learn tghe language which as he illustrates is the dominant language at usage internatianaly.
